Mtangani

Fish landing, an old mosque, the baobab, and Kuji.

Mtangani is a shehia on the southeast coast of Pemba, in Kiwani ward, Mkoani District. The landing faces a large island the people here call Kuji. The reef breaks white outside it, and smaller islets sit beside it. A chart of this same ward also names a narrow island Kisiwa cha Mtangani. The day uses the name the shore uses.

The fish landing is part of the morning. Ngalawa are worked in the mangroves, and the catch comes ashore. From there a boat hops the short water to Kuji and back, when the tide allows. It is not a long crossing.

In the bush is an old mosque of coral rag. A pointed arch still stands, with niches in the side walls, and the prayer space is open to the trees. It is not a ticketed museum. No published excavation has dated this building, so the page does not give it a century. Dress modestly. Do not climb the walls.

At the landing a great baobab stands over the boats. People here say the names of those who arrived long ago were written on the tree. Ask the host to show you. The page does not copy names it cannot read.

Palmyra palms stand in the ponds behind the road, and the road itself runs between those palms down to turquoise water. A host from Mtangani walks the mosque and the tree. A boatman takes the hop.
